Bachelor of Science - Master of Science (BS-MS) Dual Degree


  • It is a five year dual degree programme for bright and motivated science students who have passed class XII. The programme integrates classroom learning with research and provides ample scope for multidisciplinary interactions. The training during the programme enables students to pursue a career in academia, R&D institutes and science based industries.

  • BS-MS (Dual Degree) Programme is offered in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics

Core Courses

The first year of BS-MS (Dual Degree) programme consists of mandatory, common courses (core courses) from Natural and Engineering Sciences as well as interdisciplinary courses from Humanities, Social Sciences and Economic Sciences.

Pre-major
  • The second year of BS-MS (Dual Degree) programme enables students to choose at least two pre-major disciplines that guide them to make an informed choice of major/minor discipline in the third year.
  • The pre-major year consist of the courses identified by the respective departments.
  • Students admitted in Natural Sciences will have to choose at least one discipline from Natural Sciences stream.
Major/Minor
  • Third year onwards, a BS-MS student has to select one major discipline from his/her pre-major disciplines. A major discipline offers professional courses to the students during the remaining three years.
  • In addition to the major subject, BS-MS students can also choose a minor in another discipline. To earn a ‘minor’, a student has to acquire a minimum of 30 credits (including the 2nd year courses) in the discipline in which he/she wants to ‘minor’.

Fifth Year Projects

Final year BS-MS students are required to register for an MS thesis with a faculty supervisor, relevant to their major discipline.
